Robin Morrison RSPB Avocet Cruise on the Exe Estuary - Jan 2012

The Exe Estuary is a great place to watch birds all year-round but it can be particularly rewarding in winter with around 40,000 birds coming here on their winter migration. The Exe Estuary, at low tide is mainly a combination of sand and mud banks which are slowly covered as the tide comes in. The whole area is a vital feeding and resting area for this large numbers of birds. Excellent viewing is possible from the shoreline and Exminster marshes, however every year the RSPB arrange Avocet…

Ian Taylor Windy day on the estuary

I awoke at the crack of half 9 to the sound of a gently snoring retriever and a howling gale outside the window, another day in I thought, but after two restorative cups of tea, and waiting for the dog to surface, (he does like his bed) I decided a walk would do us both good.

A short drive from Countess Wear, the area of Exeter I call home, is the Powderham estate, which borders the Exe estuary, with a nice level path behind the sea wall, sadly with a railway (built by Brunel)…

Ian Taylor First blog post anywhere, ever.

I've never done one of these before, so may as well start here, I doubt I'll be that regular posting, but I'll stick bits up from time to time.

Despite horrendous man flu, worse than anyone has ever had before, i'm sure(!) this afternoon I drove down to the RSPB car park behind the Swans Nest pub near Exminster, the marshes there are a haven for thousands of birds, and its well managed, and I live about two miles from it, so its also convienient!

Swinging into the car park, a…

Linda June Penney My Garden Family

In case you were wondering why I call my garden visitors my family I thought I would explain. The reason is I cannot have children so I turn that emptiness into positively helping all the wildlife in my garden.

I can encourage wildlife in my patch to stay alive and slowly help them to feel safe, to bring their own families up in the safe haven that I am slowly creating with my darling husband David.

Yesterday I caught sight of a great tit making the red nest box hole a bit…

Jo Davies If only Snow wasn't cold and wet for wildlife photography!!

Think i must be one of the few crazy women out there who enjoys sitting in a hide, or on a forest floor to photograph !

It seems winter photography clothing for women is scarce?!

However, i have found if you buy a pair of mens stealthgear trousers you can alter them to fit a womens figure!! and so keep dry in the snow!!  (and much better than crackly ski trousers i had last winter!)

Any other women out there who are…

Nat & Dave Hall Night of the snow
