It's not necessariy the mic that is the problem, but exactly where you place it. I have a Rode NTG3, with blimp and all the other bits and pieces. It cuts out the wind noise, but I still get the jets flying overhead at several thousand metres, the washing machine next door, the farmer across the field calling his cows in etc. It also needs to be mounted away from the camera to avoid picking up camera and tripod noise. It seems the only way to get rid of most of those other unwanted sounds is to put a mic close to the subject.
