Discussions: I'm sure we'll have lots of interesting discussions about lots of different subjects but I thought I'd add a note about discussing specific cameras. Lets try to start a new discussion for each model of camera where possible (i.e. Canon 7D, Nikon D90 etc.). I'm sure there will be overlaps in many discussions but let's see how it goes!

Cheers

Here are two shots of the home made dead cat microphone covers for the Canon 7D and Canon 5D mk 2. These realy do make a difference

Hi Karen, the Rode stereovideo mic is great for ambient stereo recording or the videomic pro if you want something a bit more directional, both are a bit less than the £200 for the Sony (but not much) bear in mind you will have to buy a little adaptor to change your Sony hot shoe in to a more conventional standard shoe if you want to fit either on to the top of your camera.
I hope this helps.

Hello, I am a beginner at filming. I am currently filming with my SLR camera. I really need some help/advice. While I managed to avoid filming people themselves, I unfortunately picked up their voices on the audio.

1) Is it illegal to share a video that has unintentionally picked up children/adults voices?

I do not know these people and I cannot get permission to use them.

2) If I am not allowed to use audio of other peoples voices is there a simple way of just keeping their footsteps in the background and not their voices.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Many Thanks.

Cathy.

One of my efforts, all taken with a Canon 7d, except for the Arctic Fox bit, that was with my brothers little HD video camera, my editing is rubbish lol Sound is quite funny listening to all the camera shutters though, and it is me shouting OWWWWWW after being bitten by an arctic fox lol

Seeing Paul's comment about sound on the 5D MkII it is true that the built in mono mic is really not that great and will pick up a lot of handling noise. Speaking to someone who has just started using one of these cameras commercially he tells me has found the Rode Stereo Videomic to be a significant upgrade for a reasonable cost.

I have recently bought a Canon 7D and have been very keen to use the video. Trouble is I have been far too ambitious... trying to follow moving objects, pan and focus.... not to very good effect. Best to find static subject, set camera up securely (picks up tiniest movement) and then leave well alone... massive learning curve, but exciting! Maybe we could have a space to upload our 'we r learning' videos for critique and advice??? Don't really want to put on main video bit yet... not good enough!

I know several colleagues that have switched over to the 5D Mk11, with the intention of utilizing the video option. The camera has been well recieved in the states, that much I know. One important thing is that the sound is not as good as you would like, or indeed need.

I 'm using my Nikon D90 to do video since an year on more.
I'm not so happy of these videos but probably because I don't know very well the right mode to use it.
I'm very curious to discover what the other members have realized on this topic.
