Simon King and Autumnwatch

Dear All

The beauty of the autumn season is creeping into the chilly mornings and hinting in the colour of the leaves.


This year I shall be watching the wild world weave its magic away from the BBC and live television.

I will not be co-presenting Autumnwatch.

My decision to step away from the series has been a very difficult one, and is based on personal reasons.


I have been hugely lucky to work with such a wonderful production team, and explored the wilds of Britain with Autumnwatch and Springwatch over the years. I sincerely hope I shall again.

But I am not disappearing!

I have been putting all my energy into a new web-based project, the Wildlife Whisperer, which will be going live this autumn. Indeed, as I write, I am sitting in a house on the Shetland coast, preparing to head out at dawn to make a film showing how to track, find, observe and photograph wild otters. I will also, of course, be filming the shear charm and beauty of these exquisite creatures. These are just a few of many new films, competitions, maps, special offers and educational facilities that will, I hope, make the Wildlife Whisperer an exciting resource and entertaining website for anyone with an interest in the wild world about them. We will be giving as much attention to the wildlife on your doorstep, whether it’s garden birds or pond creatures, as we will the more elusive creatures. And we will be sharing the fun with/through our sister websites, TalkWildlife and Simon King Wildlife.

We will also be launching a new site very soon, just for fun, called Where is Simon King! Check it out and see if you can find the mini-me!

Autumn is coming, and I am as lucky, and busy, as ever, watching the marvels of nature. I look forward to continuing to share it all with you.

Ever so sorry to hear you won't be doing AutumnWatch this year Simon, you will be missed. You're an excellent presenter and I'll definitely keep an eye out for Wildlife Whisperer and anything else you're up to. Best of luck with all your plans!

I have great admiration for your enthusiasm and knowledge of wildlife and have really enjoyed your input to Autumnwatch, and other programmes, over the years. I am sorry not to see you this year but hope to have the pleasure again in the future.

Shame you're not on this year but look forward to you bringing you your knowledge and experience into this new venture, I'm sure it will make up for the gap on TV.

Bit of a shame to see so many mean spirited comments about Autumnwatch (Barry Took was doing the voiceover in my head), it continues to be entertaining and interesting for as broad an audience as possible and does well to involve the public and bring them into the programme. My 5 yr old son sits down with me and watches the recording on a Saturday and there are not many programmes we can both enjoy together and that engages him about a subject close to my heart.

I agree, I havent seen Simon say anything negative about Autumnwatch or the BBC, and its probably a little unfair to have a go at Autumnwatch just because he is no longer part of it. Maybe others know the reasons why he is stepping back from it for now, I dont pretend to, but there have been lots of enforced cuts in budgets for talent at the Beeb, so maybe the Wildlife Unit has not been immune.
While I look forward to seeing Simon on the BBC again soon, I still greatly enjoy Autumnwatch and Unsprung, and find Chris Kate and Martin to be a great team, and I enjoy the humour, which Simon also used to participate in good naturedly. In the meantime, I look forward to participating in this website, and seeing what Simon is up to with Wildlife Whisperer.

I'm sure you made the right decision Simon...I found the prog extremely irritating to put it mildly. I sincerely wish you all the very best for your future plans.

I cant agree with you totally as losing both Bill and Simon has cost the programme dearly. I am an avid fan of autumnwatch but I do have to admit it was nowhere as good this year as in previous years.

I hope springwatch is better.

Shame you were not on Autunm watch this year, but this site is great and has drawn lots of like minded people together from all over the country to share our throughts and ideas in all things wild life. This site is some thing we needed and it will go from strength to strength.
