Morning all, I have asked for a camera for christmas specifically set up for wildlife.

Ive looked at 2 that i thought could be quite good, one a fujifilm with 15x opticial zoom and a canon with a 26x opticial zoom.

Now price isnt really an issue but the fuji is £160 and the canon is £200.

May i kindly ask for opinions from experts and everyone here.

Thanks

Oliver. You dont say which models you have been looking at,I take we are talking about a compact/bridge cameras ?. The lens on these cameras are limiting, its not about zoom.

What you really need to take wildlife photography is a DSLR camera with interchangable lens. A Camera with a APS sensor with magnify youre lens by 1.5 on a Nikon and 1.6 on a Canon. Lots of deals out there to be had.

Hi Neil nice to chat to you.

Sorry for not been more specific the Fujifilm one is a compact s1800 fine pix and the canon is a powershot 3150 compact.

To contracdict myself a tad although money may appear no option £400 plus is a tad out of my range at the mo!

So slr's are the way forward then at the minute im taking?

Its all down the lens you use. You need a fast lens which has a large lens on the front which enable you to blur the back ground so the subject stands out, plus faster the lens means better low light (dawn or dusk)shots.

Some people use compacts with bird watching scopes (digiscoping), I do believe the RSPB do a kit including camera and scope unsure of cost.

Its upto you where you want to go with this. How about getting youre xmas pressie in the new year sales and also check web sites e.g parks cameras and a host lot more. But dont rush in to it.

Hi Oliver,

If you are really interested in photographing wildlife, I would recommend you spend that money on a second hand DSLR. I have had a look on ebay and there are some great bargains out there on the earlier entry level DSLRs, such as the Canon 350D... many are being sold with lens and you could get something really good to get you going for under £200. Don't get caught up with the assumption that the more mega pixels , the better the camera. I know some of the earlier DSLRs have less pixels than the new bridge cameras, but it really is not an issue unless you plan on printing really big. You will learn a lot more about photography and how to control and make the camera work for you with a DSLR.... well that's what I think!

Hi Kate,

I ended up with a Fujifilm finepix s1730.

Not quite an slr but a good cam never the less.

I am however looking to progress to an slr by the end of this year.

any tips you can offer me about the perfect shots are greatly appreciated.

Oli

I am not familiar with this camera, but I am sure you will be able to get some great shots... set your self a little project.... the only way to improve is to get out there and get using it! I look forward to seeing some of your shots.

Thanks Kate your help and support, as is everybodies on here is much appreciated.

maaged to get some pictures of 2 goldfinches, which are quite rare in wolverhampton i have to say.

Will try and upload in due course
