Permalink Reply by Jeff Harrison on March 2, 2011 at 20:26 Hi John, I'd heard of the Black Squirrels in Letchworth and several of the villages around Cambridge (including my own) also have localised populations.
We get them in the garden from time to time and I've found them to be quite aggressive towards the Greys.
I'm attaching a photo.

Permalink Reply by Martin Bailey on April 8, 2011 at 10:01 It's lucky that there aren't any of these black squirrels anywhere near red squirrel populations, as far as I'm aware, as the reds can't survive in the presence of the 'ordinary' greys, let alone these black 'super greys'!!

I would love to see Red Squirrels in the wild, the Blacks we have are slighter than the Greys and fewer in numbers. I was just interested in how bigger area the Blacks covered.

The nearest reds to you would be Brownsea Island in Dorset, and the Isle of Wight. Up here in Wales the best place to see them is Anglesey, where the greys have been effectively eliminated and the reds reintroduced. Other than that it's Cumbria or Scotland, but the greys keep spreading and the reds keep retreating!!
